Extracting Compressed (Zipped) Files in Windows Vista

  1. Find the .zip file that you downloaded (these instructions show the .zip file on the desktop)

  2. Right-click on the .zip file

  3. On the menu that appears, slide down to "Explore."
    Please note: your menu may have different items listed depending on the software that is installed on your computer.

  4. Click on Explore

  5. A window will open with the contents of the zipped file. For each portion of the USMLE orientation materials there will be one file shown in this window.

  6. Double click on the file name that appears here and follow the prompts that appear to install this portion of the orientation materials.






  7. Depending on your settings you may see a "User Account Control" dialog box indicating that "an unidentified program wants access to your computer." Click on "Allow."















  8. When the installation is complete, you can close any open dialog boxes.

  9. You should see a folder on your desk with the portion of the orientation materials you installed. If you do not see this folder on your desktop, press F5 to refresh your view.

Extracting Compressed (Zipped) Files in Windows XP

  1. Find the .zip file that you downloaded (these instructions show the .zip file on the desktop)

  2. Right-click on the .zip file



  3. On the menu that appears, slide down to "Open With."
    Please note: your menu may have different items listed depending on the software that is installed on your computer.

  4. On the pop-out menu select "Compressed (zipped) Folders."

  5. A window will open with the contents of the zipped file. For each portion of the USMLE orientation materials there will be one file shown in this window.

  6. Double click on the file name that appears here and follow the prompts that appear to install this portion of the orientation materials.


  7. When the installation is complete, you can close any open dialog boxes.

  8. You should see a folder on your desk with the portion of the orientation materials you installed. If you do not see this folder on your desktop, press F5 to refresh your view.
