Final diagnosis screen removed from Step 3 CCS cases

Posted: December 10, 2018
Updated: January 11, 2019

Step 3 examinees will no longer be asked to enter information regarding a final diagnosis before ending a computer-based case simulation (CCS) case. Most examinees who test on or after January 1, 2019 will not see the final diagnosis screen at the end of a CCS case. Although the transition will occur quickly at many test centers, there may be some locations where the changes take slightly longer to complete. The overall transition period will likely last approximately 6 weeks.

This change does not affect the scoring of the CCS cases in any way. Final diagnoses have never been used in scoring an examinee performance.

Response options in practice sessions – method for striking out

Posted: March 08, 2019

Examinees can prepare for the Step 1, Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK), and Step 3 exams by using the free practice materials available here. They may also, for a fee, sign up for a practice session at a Prometric center.

Examinees who take practice exams at Prometric centers on or after March 13, 2019 may find that the method for striking out response options in the practice session is slightly different from the method they will use in the actual exam.

If you take a practice exam at a Prometric center on or after March 13, 2019, you may see a strikeout feature that functions this way:

To strikeout a response option:
  1. Click anywhere in the option text.
  2. To remove the strikeout, click anywhere in the option text.
When you take an actual exam or use the free practice material on usmle.org, the strikeout feature will function this way:

To strikeout a response option:
  1. Click and drag over the option text.
  2. To remove the strikeout, click anywhere in the option text.
