New Registration Portal for USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK

Posted: January 29, 2025

In the coming months, the United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®) program will launch a new registration portal. The MyUSMLESM Portal, will replace the existing NBME Licensing Exam Services (NLES) platform to support all registration and related services for Step 1 and Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) for students and graduates of medical education programs accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA).

The new MyUSMLE Portal is part of a larger effort to create a consistent and efficient examinee experience. The portal consolidates key services for Step 1 and Step 2 CK into one platform, ensuring seamless access. In future phases, the MyUSMLE Portal will offer additional services and functionality. Updates will be shared as they become available.

Examinees with existing NLES accounts will be automatically transferred into the MyUSMLE Portal. These examinees will receive a link with instructions via email for accessing registration information and any permits or score reports in the new system. Until then, examinees should continue to use the NLES platform for all registration and related services for Step 1 and Step 2 CK. Please continue to monitor USMLE.org for more information on the timing of the MyUSMLE Portal launch.

For more information, please refer to the common questions below:

• When should I use the MyUSMLE Portal vs. the NLES platform and the MyNBME Examinee Portal?
Please refer to the chart below for when to use each of the three systems.
MyUSMLE Portal (MyUSMLE.org) The MyUSMLE Portal is a new registration portal launching in the coming months. It will replace the NLES platform and will support all registration and related services for Step 1 and Step 2 CK for students and graduates of LCME- and COCA-accredited medical education programs.
NLES Platform The NLES platform is the current system supporting all registration and related services for Step 1 and Step 2 CK for students and graduates of LCME- and COCA-accredited medical education programs. It will no longer be used when the MyUSMLE Portal launches.
MyNBME Examinee Portal The MyNBME Examinee Portal provides access to NBME self-assessments for all examinees. It will not be affected by the launch of the MyUSMLE Portal.
  • What registration and related services will be included in the MyUSMLE Portal?
In addition to registering for Step 1 and Step 2 CK, students and graduates of LCME- and COCA-accredited programs will access their scheduling permits and score reports through the MyUSMLE Portal. The portal will also support name changes, eligibility period extensions and score recheck requests.
  • What can I do to prepare now?
You don’t need to take any immediate action. Your NLES account will be automatically transferred into the new MyUSMLE Portal at the time the portal launches. If you use different email addresses for your NLES account and your MyNBME Examinee Portal account, you will need to use the email address associated with your NLES account to log in to the MyUSMLE Portal.
  • Will I have access to my registrations, permits and score reports in the new MyUSMLE Portal?
Yes. If you have submitted registrations and/or active permits or score reports in NLES on the day the MyUSMLE Portal launches, they will be available for you in the new portal. Unsubmitted/Saved applications will not be available in the MyUSMLE Portal.
  • Does this change affect registration for Step 3?
Not immediately. In the coming months, the MyUSMLE Portal will begin supporting Step 3 registration and score reporting services for students and graduates of LCME- and COCA-accredited programs. This transition is expected to take place no earlier than mid-2025. Until then, all USMLE examinees should continue to register for Step 3 through the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB).
  • Does this change affect international medical students and graduates (IMGs)?
Not immediately. USMLE’s co-sponsors, FSMB and NBME, are developing plans to centralize all USMLE service functions. As part of these plans, USMLE services currently provided to IMGs by ECFMG®, a division of Intealth™, will transition to FSMB and NBME. This transition is expected to take place no earlier than mid-2025. Until then, ECFMG will continue to provide USMLE services to IMGs. Updates will be provided as they become available. Please continue to monitor USMLE.org for any announcements.
